[edit] Background
The mission of the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA) emphasizes the need to "promote life-long learning by the students of Illinois through the association’s "leadership and support for the development, promotion, and improvement of the school library media profession and programs in Illinois." This year’s annual conference in November 2007 — Making Powerful Learners Virtually Everywhere — promises to offer an extensive program of innovative technologies, including virtual reference, digital storytelling, blogs, wikis, literacy, gaming, social networking, and more.
Last year, ISLMA maintained a conference blog during the proceedings and will continue that tradition, providing an online journal of insights, sessions, and memorial moments. These activities exemplify efforts to promote awareness of library innovation and best practices among school library media specialists that are critical to continuous human resource development.
Embracing its conference theme, Making Powerful Learners Virtually Everywhere, ISLMA created a conference wiki to share conference information and presentation materials. In addition, a virtual conference component enables those not able to attend the conference in person an opportunity to participate and interact with colleagues online.
[edit] Technology Leadership Characteristics Showcased
- Human Resource Development: The conference sessions -- and the opportunity to participate in the conference wiki -- promote technology competency development of school library media specialists. The conference wiki also fosters networking and collaboration.
- Integration of Technology into Services: ISLMA uses an interactive technology tool to expand and enhance its conference offerings to the association's members.
