[edit] Background
The Roselle Public Library, like many libraries today, understands that traditional library catalog interfaces often fall short of patron expectations. In addition to its traditional library catalog interface, the library provides an alternative interface, powered by Aquabrowser for searching their catalog. This technology application allows library users to create a visual map of word associations as they search the library’s collection. By monitoring patron preferences and levels of satisfaction, the library has enhanced its web presence and joins a growing number of libraries internationally involved in designing the next generation OPAC.
Through word association and a tagcloud approach to visualizing information, patrons can spot related areas and change the scope of their search by selecting a theme presented in the tagcloud. A search started for "abraham lincoln" can easily shift focus to "gettysburg" using the embedded links within the discovery cloud.
